Ultimate Shootouts are what the SCPG is all about.  These events are where the pros can push their boundaries, beginners accelerate their learning, and everyone can enjoy being amongst their creative peers. Our goal is to bring together artists without egos, who are passionate about their craft and put them in amazing venues. Oh, and SCPG’ers tend to be immune to those last-minute “illnesses” that seem to plague artists :)

This group community is built by those of us who want to get amazing work done in a TEAM-based setting, without worrying about flakes, no-shows, or one of the other many variables in setting up a trade (TFP) shoot. Due to the size of our group, we can absorb those dropouts and the shoot will still go on.  We have so many people that enjoy these events that people are bummed if they miss out on these shoots.

One of the most important elements of this group is that we cater to very talented people in the makeup, hair, model, and photography industries.   This mixing bowl of talent presents one of the most potent networking opportunities you will experience.  Who knows, you just might run into someone that can help take your creative projects to another level.

So, now that you have  gist of our purpose for being here, here’s how the shoots break down for each group.  Each participant is required to have a contributing role, which creates a very productive environment we can all flourish in.

The officers of the group figure out the location, venues, themes, and ticket prices for each event.  Yes, there are registration fees associated with each shoot (mostly depending on the venue), which serves many purposes:

  • We book venues that would be prohibitively out of reach for individuals or small group (pirate ship, anyone?)
  • We secure all permits needed to shoot at locations
  • Those who are serious about their work attend these events
    • Those who flake.. well.. don’t show up :)
  • The cost of renting a studio alone is at least $25 per hour (in SD), which doesn’t include a reliable MUA, hairstylist, model, or photographer.  We shoot for 6-8 hours with a full team.
  • Booking a talented team of people you may not know will be more expensive than attending a shootout
  • Peer-based photo contests which help push the talent bar higher and reward those who produce extraordinary work

Makeup Artists & Hairstylists

Makeup artists (MUAs) and Hairstylists/hairdressers often work in tandem to get models all dolled up.  The creative themes we use at these shoots are designed to give everyone a chance to venture outside the perpetual box for things to show their range, creativity, and skills at bringing looks to models of all backgrounds.

MUAs and Hairstylists are expected to bring their own kits and materials to use at the shootouts (except eyelashes).  As such, the ticket prices are typically at the lowest tier to compensate for their consumables.

Models

Models looking to build a portfolio also get work with very talented hair and makeup teams to take their beauty to another level.

Once they’re all dolled up, they head out and meet with photographers to model based on the theme for the shoot, hitting poses and facial expressions throughout their session with each photographer.

Models are expected to bring their own wardrobe and eyelashes.

Photographers

Photographers bring their own cameras, lenses, and lighting (insured, I hope!).  They show up, chat with other photogs, scout the venue, or set up shop. Once models are done with hair and makeup, photogs meet with the models and off they go!

It is very important that photographers know who they are working with, and business cards help immensely.  Once the shoot is over, photographers will edit their photos, uploading a reasonable amount of images for the time spent with each model.

Please note that photographers failing to provide proofs or hi-res images as requested by MUAs, hairstylists, and/or models will be excluded from all events AND banned from the facebook group, with a public notice to all members stating the reasons behind the banning.  It does not make sense to withhold images for whatever reason you feel entitled to.  It is part of the terms of agreement when you register for the event.

Assistants

Assistants are those who are specifically registered to a specific participant, and may not reap the benefits of the portfolio images generated at the shootouts.  They are the responsibility of the model or photographer, and their actions do reflect on the person they are registered with.

Assistants may not bring DSLRs (cameras with interchangeable lenses) to the shoot. They may not have their hair and makeup done.  They may not vote for the photo contests.

Everyone

This is a sociable workshop/event, and everyone is here to learn, create, network, and have an amazing time doing so. Those who are outgoing, can take the  initiative, and introduce themselves to others will benefit the most.  You’re among other artists and creative people at our shoots, if there’s a place to break out of your shell it’s with us :)

Hope this helps! Good luck and see you at the next Ultimate Shootout!
